Visiting the Empire State Building Can Be Cheap And Fun
Before the Twin Towers came to be the most visited place in New York City was probably the Empire State Building. With its distinctive point on the top of the building it is one of the most recognized building when people thing about New York City. The strange thing that most people don't know is the era that the building was built in. The Empire State Building was built during one of the worst times in the United States "The Great Depression".
The stock market crash of 1929 left a lot of people out of work and looking for any means possible to feed their families that came over to the new country for a better way of life. Most immigrants found work building the new skyscraper in 1930. In some ways this building was a sign that America will be all right at a time when things were so wrong.
Visiting the Empire State Building is fun and there is a way to do it that will save you both time and money. Most tourist to the city get on line around daybreak to go up to the top observation deck thinking they can do that first and get it out of the way and then go do something else exciting in the city that never sleeps. This is the wrong way to visit the building. The best time to visit the building is in the late afternoon this way you get to see the sunset and you also get to view the city lights all lit up on the other buildings.
What I would recommend is get to the building around 4:30 or 5 in the afternoon and don't pay for just the observation deck pay for a combined plan that includes "The Skyride". The Skyride is a simulated flight over all the NYC attractions and it is narrated by New York's own Kevin Bacon. I consider this one of the best things to do in NYC while on vacation. What it also does is get you up in the building quicker and you go right to the observation deck afterwards without waiting on the huge line that forms there.
It only cost a few dollars more but it is well worth it just for the time you save by itself but the little tour is really good. It is almost like flying in a helicopter over NY, but better as it will take you over Yankee Stadium one minute and put you on the World Famous Cyclone roller coaster in Coney Island the next minute.
